Large-Bore Magnetic Encoder Solves Speed and Position Measurement Problem In Harsh Environment

A major manufacturer of torque flanges (large-diameter rotating torque transducers) has solved the problem of accurate speed and position measurement in the harsh environment of automotive dynamometers and power train test stands. After experiencing early failure of their optical encoders, the manufacturer installed a large-bore (200mm) magnetic encoder directly into the torque flange, providing a compact, reliable speed and position sensing solution.

The large-bore magnetic encoder, a standard Admotec EK600, reliably measures the speed and position of the power train components operating at up to 10,000 rpm, and is unaffected by the oil, dirt and the 100° C temperatures of the application. The magnetic encoder consists of a custom-configured magnetic encoder wheel and a magnetoresistive sensor with differential line driver outputs for two incremental channels in quadrature. Over 100 combinations of resolution, wheel OD, and operating air gap are available.
